Illinois does not currently accept nurses educated online, via LPN-RN through excelsior
WHAT is the problem? If this issue could be addressed maybe it would be possible for excelsior to alter their path for those nurses living in the states that do not accept! Perhaps the DPR in those states could set up a program for nurses who graduated through excelsior to complete whatever is MISSING?
with a nursing shortage, WHY are they trying to make it more difficult? You would think this would be an answer to the problem....and they shoot it down.

Some of us are NOT 20 something with no kids living at home with mommy and daddy, and CANNOT attend traditional education routes! BUT we still want to be nurses!

permission to CROSS POST EVERYWHERE!

I have contacted the dpr, and the governor. Perhaps it would help if other Il nurses would do the same.

It would be helpful to start with the DPR, and see what could be done about acceptance of online nursing degrees. Perhaps there could be an education element that must be done in the state through a local college of nursing, or perhaps the DPR and the Illinois nursing association could contact excelsior to see if there could be further education for prospective RN's in order to allow them to sit for the RN exam. I feel that if Illinois is accepting foreign nursing degrees, they should allow accomodations for those who are educated in the US!

the Lt Governors office is actually looking into this, it would be helpful if ALL LPN's would drop the Lt Governor a line in Illinios, as well as in their state. This is affecting the professinal career goals of all LPN's in the states that will not accept online distance learning degrees.
We need to speak out if change is to ever be made in our profession. The squeaky wheel is the one that gets the oil.
If we dont get together and speak out, someone else is controlling our advancement!
You can find the Lt Gov of Illinois through the Illinios website, or for your prosepctive state.
Can we stand together?

What a great point! I never thought about your point concerning the acceptance of foreign degrees! My sister-in-law is a RN at a city hospital in Ct. They are hiring foreign nurses from all over! This particular hospital does not hire LPN's. Can't figure that one out either. They are also unionized.

I have recently wondered to myself. . . is this a way to get foreigners into the country without the waiting period? - just a thought - nothing really suprises me anymore.

By the way, I live in New York - the home of excelsior and know people going through the program - they do have to go to Albany for the labs.

Wish you luck - and keep up the pressure!

HI,

I HAVE A QUESTION.. DOES THE NURSES KNOW ABOUT THIS BEFORE THEY ATTEND THIS ONLINE PROGRAM. IF NOT THEY SHOULD BE INFORMED SO THEY CAN MAKE A DECISION TO USE THIS ONLINE PROGRAM OR NOT.

Nawlins Girl: I think you are asking me if they know about the lab. beforehand - I don't know - I just assumed they were told.

My personal dr.'s LPN is taking the course and she told me she has to go to Albany and my instructor has mentioned this also. As a matter of fact my instructor has even said that the only problem with the lab is that you don't know what type of case you are going to get until you get there - where apparently anything can be thrown at you. I believe it is 2 or possibly 3 days of labs - not sure - I remember thinking that would require a night or two in Albany. (my son is college in Troy, NY and has an apartment in downtown Albany).

I would think that if a person were to go to the excellsior web-site it should be mentioned there if not, there must be a contact of some-type.

I know California does not either now. I started using EC to get my BSN then backed out as I saw the trend of some states not recognizing EC. I believe the problem stems from their acceptance of non nurses experience towards the nurse credential, and I am concerned about this too. A EMT or RT cannot 'learn' nursing this way. EC should just stick with LPN's and RN's in my opinion, and they might gain back their reputation. What's everyone else think??
Success is the best revenge.
