I want to become a nurse, then eventually a CNM. I live in RI, with my two small kids ( 16 mo and 4 mo) while my husband is in Iraq-he is active duty army. I am only 20 but I love all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as postnatal issues. I would love to get my nursing degree ASAP. All of the online programs I looked into kind of confuse me..... I don't know the difference between a maters and bachelors.... I just want to become a regular nurse in the shortest time possible, which will probably take awhile since I only have nights or weekends to attend or do the studying online. Any help would be great!

Good for you that you want to go into nursing!! I don't know much about the online programs. I was considering them for my bachelor's degree in nursing. I have my diploma in nursing from a hospital-based school, which are being closed the last I heard. That type of program only took me 2 years. I graduated in '98. I think that you should at least have your bachelor's degree before you go into midwifery school. (I'm not positive though) I always thought that I wanted to be a CNM also, until I worked in OB. That's where I have been for the past 2 years as a staff nurse in labor & delivery. The midwives put in a lot of hours. At least the type of midwife that I would want to be. One that is on call for her patients all the time. I work in a very small hospital, so maybe it is different where you are. At least work in OB and get some good work experience first. I think that it would be hard to do midwifery school with young children. Mine are 3yrs and 9yrs and I'm not sure I'm ready to take that much time away from my kids. I'm sure it would be hard, but well worth it in the end. I guess my advice isn't all that great!?! I think I just rambled more than anything. OB is an awesome place to work, so go for it!

Online is NOT the way to get your initial nursing degree. You might be able to clear some science and psych courses that way but practicum doesn't happen online. Visit your local community college and find out where there is a local ADN program. This is a two year entry levl program to get you started. . . They can help to guide you so you don't waste time in the wrong or non-equivelent courses. The online bachelors and master's programs are generally for persons who are already licensed.
