mad.gif Is anyone dealing with their hospital passing up Nurse's Week and celebrating a general employee week? What is your hospital doing for Nurse's Week?

Hopefullly recognition of our nurses wont be lost. To show my appreciation I, A1NURSES INC., will sponsor a Happy Hour!! on May 6th to acknowledge the outstanding nurses in the Dallas Fort Worth area!!!
We are currently trying to finalize the venue - any suggestions? Please check with me personally or watch this board. Mark@a1nurses.com biggrin.gif

I noticed in several hospitals around my area that they have gone into the direction of honoring all hospital employees that week. Their rationale was tha "we all ake care of the patient" Its a shame really considering there is a week for secretaries etc. The unit secretaries all go out to lunch and get flowers.

huh.gif mad.gif WoW - just when you think that what you do actually counts!

However, Nurses Week in our hospital meant that the nursing administrators got to go to the high-profile guest speaker lecture, the massage therapy and other perks. The bedside nurse couldn't leave for an hour without spending an hour after her shift "catching up" or asking another to double their work load. These sessions were always at 9AM - just when the bedside nurse is their busiest.

Our hospital plans all of the "festivities" for daylight employees and seems to forget about the other two shifts. We either have to come in on our time off or miss out. How fair is that?

I'm sorry that so many of you didn't feel appreciated on nurses week. I missed out on any hospital festivities due to working the night shift, but my travel agency was great. I got a gift in the mail which totally made up for the lack of the hospitals appreciation.

My hospital gives a small gift to all the employees in patient care areas but they do still call it Nurses Week and refer to it that repeatedly. I work in a hospital-based clinic and the other staff (receptionists, etc) appreciated the gift but they were aware that the purpose of it was to celebrate Nurses' Week. I don't think that any of the nurses were offended. True, there is a Secretaries' Week, but I don't think there's a "File Clerk" week or a "Coder and Transcriptionist" week, etc., so it didn't bother me for these folks to get a clipboard and a pair of scissors along with the nurses.

mad.gif The hospital I work at forewent honoring nurses as well, ubiquitiously lumping it into "hospital week."

Interestingly enough, they still hold "Laboratory Week," and "Radiology Week," and the such.

I wrote an article for this past Nurses Week, which can be found here.

It's a sad reality that hospital administrators not only underappreciate but also appear to harbor animosity for nurses.

I'm sure they would like to pay us less, but given the perpetual nursing shortage, cannot. tongue.gif

So, don't do them any favors. Work overtime only if it suits your purposes. Use sick time before you lose it. And laugh all the way to the bank.
