Which of the following findings indicate to the nurse that a client’s colonoscopy scheduled for 12 p.m should be postponed.

1. The client ate breakfast at 8 a.m
2. The clients urinated at 9 a.m
3. The client took a laxative yesterday
4. The client is allergic to shell fish

ANSWER 1

Rationale

Colonoscopy is the examination of the rectum, colon, cecum, and ileocecal valve.

1. Should be NPO 6-8 hours prior to test
2. No indication for an empty bladder
3. Laxative is given a day before procedure to cleanse the bowl
4. Dye or contrast is not used for procedure; therefore, allergies are not important.
