Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm a UK trained and based Paediatric Nurse who's wanted to nurse in the States for years and has actively been in the application process for over a year.
From what I understand no matter which state I wish to go to, I have to sit the NCLEX but before doing this I have to have my credentials assessed by the CGFNS - then they will say yes I can sit the NCLEX or no I can't. My problem is my training, I've been told in the past that because I'm not general trained, I won't be allowed to sit the NCLEX. After much searching I found an American agency willing to take me on, but from my previous research I'm still skeptical.
We are trained differently as student nurses in the UK to the USA, we specialise half way through our training into the field we wish to work in, in my case, Paeds, although the first half of our training is general based.
I'm currently waiting for the CGFNS response which seems to be taking forever! Can I do anything else to help my cause? I don't want to work in any other environment in which I'm trained to - I've been working in Neonates for 6 and a half years. Is there any other UK Paediatric nurses who have been through this? Can anyone else share a timeline from using the CGFNS? I sent some paperwork a month ago as did my school of nursing that has not been acknowledged yet. Or anyone who is working or has worked with a UK nurse, can they share with me what they had to go through?
Thank you!
Brit Nurse after some advice :)

hiya,
i'm an american nurse working in the UK, as i become familiar with your nurse education system by mentoring students etc, i can see that you may run into probs. the NCLEX covers all areas of nursing albeit at a basic level. adult, peds, mother/baby, geriatrics, mental health. i think you could study the other areas because it's at a basic level. if you just remember to prioritize your interventions and think wholistically (sp?)
sorry i can't give any more advise, i'm here in birmingham if you need a tutor!!!!!

Thanks for your response! Can I ask a question? I take it I can't sit the NCLEX of my own will, I have to have the CGFNS go ahead first?! Thank you! I might take you up on the tutoring ;-)

i'm not sure about what you need to take the test, when i think about it we had to have documentation from our nursing school to show we had completed an accredited program. i will ask one of the philipino nurses at work tomorrow as i know they have taken it it london.
where are you in the UK??
i just found out we will be banded finally and get our back pay, i like it here but sometimes i really get discouraged about the pay!!!

I've just contacted my local School of Nursing and they do a conversion course from Child to Adult, which will give me a general qualification. I don't know if this will be sufficient though transcript wise to satisfy the CGFNS, what do you think?
I'm in Cambridge, not too far from Birmingham, where are you working? I used to work in Coventry

i spoke to some philipinos at work and they suggested the state of california website, this is a link to the specific info you might need. they said you can get a whole packet of information to apply and then schedule a test in london. you can probably get similar info from whatever state you are planning to go to. i am from chicago, so i know about lots of hospitals there.
hope that helps!

hello....
just read all your posts and i have some info to share...
I know a nurse from UK and yes, you have to do some make-up hours for certain nursing courses. For this, you have to wait for the CGFNS evaluation in order to know exactly what courses you have to take up.
Once you have taken the necessary courses, you can sit for NCLEX which you have to take no matter what state you want to work at.
If you intend to work in NY, may I suggest that you apply directly to NY BON.
Apply for the CVS for NY done by CGFNS and apply for NCLEX at the same time. It will take probably between 6-8 mons, sometimes longer.
DO NOT apply to CA BON as they have different requirements. CA BON WILL NOT issue you a license even if you pass the NCLEX unless you have a SSN. Also, even if you have the SSN and was issued a license for endorsement, you will have to apply STILL for the CVS for NY, which will take a few mons again to process.
Since you are determined to work in NY, apply straight to NY BON. It will save you time in the long run.
Hope this helps.
