I think a good starting place would be to think of yourself if you were a patient and how you would like tobe treated to preserve your dignity.
When a patient is admitted to a hospital, they lose a lot of their own control over many things. EX. when to eat, sleep, what to wear, smoking, phone etc they are exposed and examined and often treated like objects or diagnoses, but the nurse's responsibility is to remember that they are a human being, an individual with certain needs, preferences and rights and to do the best she can to insure that these are respected by all members of the team. A very impotant part of this is to treat the patient with respect and to no judge the patient by her own values, judgements, etc.
Some things are simple like asking an adult if they prefer to be called Mr. Smith or by their first name, other things are more complex like not judging the behavior of a patient who is admitted with endocarditis due to IV drug abuse.
I think that if you take a look at your own life and cicumstances you will be able to identify times when you felt others treated you with respect and dignity and probably times when you felt as if you were treated with less respect and dignity.
I hope this was helpful
Lisa
