A 56-year-old client with pneumonia is in respiratory distress. The healthcare provider prescribes the client 90% oxygen. How should the nurse administer the oxygen?

a. Non rebreather mask with a flow rate of 10 L/min
b. Venturi mask with a flow rate of 14 L/min
c. Nasal cannula with a flow rate of 6 L/min
d. Simple face mask with a flow rate of 8 L/min


The correct answer is A
Rational

Non rebreather mask with a flow rate of 10 L/min delivers from 80% to 90% oxygen. Venturi mask with a flow rate of 14 L/min delivers 55% oxygen. Nasal cannula with a flow rate of 2 L/min delivers 28% oxygen. Simple face mask with a flow rate of 8 L/min delivers 60% oxygen.

my feedback is 1, easy
but i have extensive ICU experience. for NCLEX i would think it would be average difficulty

I think that is an excellent question to ask on NCLEX as it establishes knowledge of oxygen delivery.

This question would be of average-high difficulty for a novice nurse I'd say. smile.gif
