1. You have a patient with heparin infusion. Am last PTT was 63.8. You get next results, and now is 23.5. What could have caused PTT levels to drop?
2. Your patient reports to you he has some slight bleeding when brushing his teeth and he also saw blood in his stool. What are your interventions. Last PTT 74.6. Your range is 60-80.
3. You have an order to start heparin protocol. Imitial bolus is 5000 units. How will you give the initial bolus? Is it all straight unclamped infusion, or do I convert that by heparin protocol?

hi,

1. first i check to see if the pt was connected to the heparin gtt and if so , next i would redraw the lab and see what the outcome of that result was. Also, i would notify the md.

2. I would notifiy md and im sure he would stop the heparin and draw stat coags and cbc.

3. The 5000 unit bolus is given iv push then start the gtt per order.

Thank you for the ideas for heparing problems. These were not schoolwork questions, but problems from my work. I looked some up in books but could not find one "agreeable" answer. Thanks guys for reply smile.gif

No, I am not a student any more, RN now. But it is my first year as a new nurse, so I so and probably will have a lot of questions. Thanks
