Hi,
I just signed up and wanted to say hi to everybody here. Is it working? I just started working after graduation from a nursing school, passed Nclex, and am looking for any advice from experienced, and also new nurses. I also have a question. I feel like I am rushing throughoutl the day at work. I do not want to be just done, I really want to learn something each day, but there is no time to open charts and really read... How did you guys work on you organizational skills?
thanks

welcome and congrats!
organizational skills will come with time. when i first started, i worked days (busy!) and would go home after work and look at my "brains" or assignment and refer back to my textbooks or the computer. of course, if there was something i couldn't wait to look deeper into, i'd ask another nurse or MAKE the time to search the computer. don't be afraid to confront the dr's, too, if you have a question. now i work 12 hour nights which start really busy, but then there is usually time to scan the charts.
one piece of advice i got from my coworkers has gotten me and others thru a tough shift...you are only one person and can only do so much, this is why we are a 24 hour profession.
good luck, don't hesitate to ask questions here and share experiences.

Hi Evana, welcome to nursing. Don't be hard on yourself. Organizational skills come with time. Take the time necessary to make sure that you are careful with meds and special procedures and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. It will take you a good year or two to really feel comfortable when you start nursing on each floor or area where you work. Slowly but surely your knowledge will increase. Most doctors and nurses enjoy teaching new nurses and you will find that if you ask questions that you will soon develop a good working relationship with them.
